To make the perfect diamond purchase one should be versed in evaluation of the stone. For a diamond the 4 C’s are highly significant. These 4 C’s refer to the Cut, Clarity, Colour and the Carat weight of the diamond, recognized as the four primary characteristics of diamonds by experts. You should ask for a copy of the diamond certificate before making your purchase. This certificate, usually referred to as a diamond certification, is proof that the stone has been examined thoroughly by professionals. A stone is given the diamond certificate after an unbiased examination by internationally acclaimed experts which approve the stone for use.
A high level of expertise is required for diamond evaluation, it is of the utmost importance to know the precise attributes and characteristics of your diamond. The Diamond Certificate is generally referred to as a Diamond Grading Report given by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or other acknowledged labs such as The America Gem Society (AGS), European Gemological Laboratory (EGS), International Gemological Institute (IGI). The diamond stone subject to scrutiny is analysed using various tools such as a microscope etc. An expert’s eye can itself make a much more concrete analysis than any commoner can. For examination, a diamond usually termed as the test stone is compared to a standard set of stones for comparison based grading, for example, while testing the colour of the stone. In these examinations the human eye plays a vital role along with all the industrial equipment
A complete Diamond Grading Report or the certificate as it is based on scrutiny of a stone in various aspects of design and quality. A comprehensive grading report contains expert’s word on the diamond’s cut, clarity, colour, symmetry and other significant characteristics. Here we have enlisted the contents of a standard Diamond Grading Report.
The report elaborates the exact shape and cut of the stone under study.
This section enlists the various dimensions of the stone. The standard unit of measurement used is millimetre.
Carat Weight records the mass value of the diamond in the mass measurement unit of carat, one carat is equivalent to two hundred milligrams.
The certificate contains the colour grade of the stone with D representing a transparent or completely hue free diamond while Z signifying presence of noticeable colour in the stone.
This section explains the strength of colour and related characteristics.
The clarity grade of imperfections is allotted after careful examination under 10x magnification range.
Cut grade is usually given for round cut diamonds only. It is determined by the design and the face up appearance of the diamond.
This section contains information on facet placements and surface.
Grades the surface smoothness of the stone.
This section has information regarding the alignment, shape, Interrelationship of the placements of the faces and overall evenness.
The clarity pot contains a map which explains the position, number and size of the various inclusions in the diamond
This is a pectoral representation of the diamond’s proportions.
The Grading Report also contains a Comments section which discusses all the other aspects which have not been included in the above mentioned categories. It is important that you get to look through the grading report of the diamond you have chosen for your purchase. This report explains everything that you need to know and helps you decide without compromising quality.
The GIA is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to producing consistent, accurate and unbiased grading reports. Until the middle of the twentieth century, there was no agreed-upon standard by which diamonds could be judged.
GIA created the first, and now globally accepted standard for describing diamonds:
Today, the 4Cs of Diamond Quality is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world. The creation of the Diamond 4Cs meant two very important things: diamond quality could be communicated in a universal language, and diamond customers could now know exactly what they were about to purchase. As creator of the Diamond 4Cs and the International Diamond Grading System™, GIA is not only a global authority, but the world’s trusted source for unbiased assessment. Diamonds graded by the GIA are the most highly valued and respected in the industry.
Trained eyes scrutinise the diamond using specific tools and analyse the ratios of the dimensions, clarity, colour, polish, symmetry and other elements before determining its grade. Any diamond that weighs over 1.0 carat will be automatically assessed for clarity and rated on a plot chart of inclusions, and round diamonds also include a cut grade on their reports.
All GIA graded diamonds have a unique serial number laser inscribed on the girdle which enables you to match the diamond to its certification. If you look carefully, you can see the inscription on the girdle of the diamond below.
Diamond Dossier Report & Diamond Grading Reports.
These reports are standard practice for all diamonds under 1.00ct. The largest difference between a dossier and a full grading report is that a dossier does not have a GIA diamond plot, which maps the location of inclusions.
A full grading report is that a diamond dossier does not have a GIA diamond plot, which maps the location of inclusions.
GIA issues the Diamond Dossier for loose natural diamonds between 0.15 and 1.99 carats in the D-to-Z colour range. The Diamond Dossier is not issued for synthetics, simulants, mounted diamonds, diamonds that have undergone unstable treatments such as fracture filling or coating, or diamonds that have been HPHT processed. Any evidence of other treatment is prominently disclosed in the report.
The GIA Diamond Grading Report includes an assessment of the 4Cs – Colour, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight – along with a plotted diagram of its clarity characteristics and a graphic representation of the diamond’s proportions. GIA issues the Diamond Grading Report for loose natural diamonds only, weighing 0.15 carats or more. For standard round brilliant cut diamonds falling in the D-to-Z colour range, the report also includes a GIA Cut grade.
